30-Day 10,000 Step Challenge – 1 Week Update

It’s been 1 week since my 30-day walking challenge kicked off. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out my post about it here. Basically, I’m trying to get 10,000 steps per day until May 11th, or for 30 days straight. This is in an effort to help myself get more cardio and more activity in general into my day.

I work a pretty sedentary office job. Before starting this challenge, I was averaging about 2,000 steps per day. I know that this is a pretty low amount and basically means that I was not moving around much at all. While I do rock climb, which helps me gain strength, cardio endurance is just as important.

So, 1 week down. How did it go? Let’s look at my stats.

How do I feel the first week went?

So….. it definitely didn’t go perfectly. Actually, I only met my goal of 10,000 steps one time. On the 12th, my boyfriend and I walked to a coffee shop near my apartment, which was 1.5 miles one way. It was very easy to get 10,000 steps that day due to that little adventure. However, the other days required me to be much more intentional with how I got my steps in.

I’ve taken to walking for 20-30 minutes right when I get I home from work. Those were the days where I got 6,000+ steps. On the 16th and 17th, well…. I was just lazy. Let’s be honest. I just didn’t feel like going for a walk those days, and my step count reflects that.

But, I checked my weekly Fitbit report, and I averaged a little over 6,000 steps per day last week. This is actually huge for me, since, like I said, I probably only averaged 2,000-3,000 steps per day before. And that is what this challenge is all about for me. During this 30-day challenge, while I would like to hit 10,000 steps, it is more important to me to make lasting change and improve even a little bit from where I was before.

If you are participating in the challenge, how is it going for you? Let me know in the comments!
